Charles Ward, St. Hugh's founding pastor, celebrated Sunday masses first at the Playhouse Theater, and later at Coconut Grove Elementary School. Father Ward did the first parish census of Catholics in the area, many of whom worshipped at Little Flower Church. The First Holy Communion was celebrated at Assumption Academy chapel, now St. Jude Melkite Church.
